The quest to improve your gas mileage |
Here are some basic tips to help you improve your gas mileage.
Drive efficiently
Drive the Speed Limit -- as a rule of thumb, you can assume that each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying an additional $0.20 per gallon for gas.
Don't race to stoplights -- Accelerate slowly and try to time lights so that you don't need to use your brakes.
Remove Excess Weight -- An extra 100 pounds in your vehicle could reduce your MPG by up to 2%.
Avoid Excessive Idling -- Cars with larger engines waste more gas at idle than cars with smaller engines.
Use Cruise Control -- On the highway, cruise control helps you maintain a constant speed.
Use Overdrive Gears -- Overdrive reduces your engine RPM, saves gas and reduces engine wear.
Regular Vehicle Maintenance
Engine Tuning -- Faulty oxygen sensors or weak firing old spark plugs can kill your gas mileage.
Get a tuneup. Replace your Air Filter Regularly -- Replacing a clogged air filter can improve your car's gas mileage by as much as 10 percent and it's generally a simple DIY procedure. Not only will replacing a dirty air filter save gas, it will protect your engine.
Keep Tires Properly Inflated -- Under-inflated tires lower your gas mileage by creating resistance at the road. It makes your vehicle harder to roll. Properly inflated tires are safer and last longer. Check your tire pressure every couple weeks and inflate to the highest rated pressure written on the sidewall of your tire.
